Coveralls vs. Overalls: The PPE Diesel Shops Actually Need (Kimberly-Clark N95, Sterling Gloves, Tactical Boots)

How to choose between coveralls and overalls for diesel work. A PPE buyer with 12 years of mistakes explains when you need NIOSH-approved Kimberly-Clark N95 respirators, Kimberly-Clark Sterling nitrile gloves, and tactical boots.

I've been the person who orders PPE for a diesel maintenance shop. I've also been the person who wasted about $7,400 on the wrong stuff. That second part is why I'm writing this.

The internet wants a clean answer to 'coveralls vs. overalls.' There isn't one. Whether you should wear coveralls, bib overalls, a respirator, or a pair of tactical boots depends on what you're doing that day. That sounds obvious, but it's exactly what I got wrong for years.

So here's the way I think about it now: four real scenarios, with a different equipment setup for each. This is the PPE diesel shops actually need, not a magic list.

Coveralls vs. overalls: what the words mean

In the U.S., coveralls are a one-piece garment that covers your arms and legs. Overalls are usually the bib-and-brace style pants that leave your shoulders and arms free. In a diesel shop, those words get mashed together, so let me be clear: I'm talking about whatever keeps your work clothes from soaking up a lifetime of oil.

Actually, I've also heard people in the UK call coveralls 'overalls.' If that's you, just translate. The principle is the same: what do you need to protect, and how much abuse can the garment take?

The four questions that decide your PPE setup

Before you add anything to the cart, answer these:

  • Is this job dirty enough to ruin a regular uniform?
  • Is there a fire or arc hazard?
  • Will I be on my feet, under a truck, or in a truck cab?
  • Am I spending time next to running diesel engines?

Your honest answers determine which scenario below you're in.

Scenario 1: oil changes, brake work, fluid spills, and filthy hands

This is the classic 'I need to change oil on a freight truck' situation. You're kneeling in drip pans, wrestling hydraulic hoses, and wiping your hands on your thighs. If you wear your normal pants and a hoodie, you'll end up carrying the last 500,000 miles of some engine's life all over the shop.

The best fit here is disposable coveralls over street clothes, or a set of laundering coveralls that stays at the shop and gets sent out on a schedule. Diesel gets into fabric. I learned that the expensive way: the $80 cotton overalls I bought at a workwear shop looked good for about four weeks. Then they were soaked through, and washing them just made the shop floor oily. The better route was a box of disposable coveralls for the really dirty days and a laundering service for the regular stuff.

Glove pick: Kimberly-Clark Sterling nitrile gloves earned their spot in our dispenser. They're black, textured, and thicker than the cheap blue ones. They handle degreasers and brake cleaner better. Do not buy one glove and assume it works for every job. For general diesel work, Sterling is the baseline I order.

Scenario 2: welding, grinding, or cutting

Here's the counterintuitive part: you do not want the cheapest poly-cotton coveralls for hot work. You do not want polyester near an arc, period. It melts to skin.

In 2022, I ordered a batch of rugged-looking poly-blend coveralls for a mechanic who was practicing overhead welding. That was a $480 mistake plus a trip to a burn unit waiting to happen. We got lucky. I still cringe when I think about it.

Best fit: FR-rated coveralls with a label from a legitimate testing program, plus leather gloves and a welding shield. Full coveralls, not bibs. Overalls leave your arms exposed, and your arms are the first thing to get hit by sparks. If you're doing an oil change in the same shop, change out of the FR coveralls before you soak them in diesel—diesel contamination can wreck their protective properties.

Boots: choose a leather upper, not synthetic mesh, for hot work. I know tactical boots are popular, and some of them are fine, but you have to check the material label. A pair with nylon webbing can melt into your foot. That's a hard no.

Scenario 3: inspections, road calls, and parts runs

This is probably the most common daytime work. You're not covered in oil and you're not welding, but you're walking on oily concrete, climbing in and out of trucks, and holding heavy filters.

Best fit: lightweight coveralls or comfortable bib overalls over a t-shirt. Honestly, a lot of our techs just wear FR jeans and a job shirt because they can move better. The real decision here is footwear. Tactical boots with a composite toe are a genuine option. I have three pairs in our shop. They fit snugger than a traditional work boot, the soles are oil-resistant, and they give you ankle support when you're stepping off a trailer lift gate. Same design features that make a patrol boot good on your feet make it good on a parts run.

Keep a box of Sterling nitrile gloves in the truck. You will still end up handling an oily filter or a leaking line, and you don't want to be digging around the cab without gloves.

Scenario 4: diesel exhaust PPE, DPF work, and burned oil fumes

This is where I see the biggest gap in diesel maintenance PPE. A lot of shops treat exhaust smell as part of the job. It's not just a smell—it's fine particulate matter, and regular exposure deserves respect.

Best fit: a NIOSH-approved respirator. The keyword is 'NIOSH-approved,' not 'will this fit my face and look cool?' We keep the Kimberly-Clark NIOSh N95 respirator around for routine exhaust exposure when a risk assessment says N95 is enough. The duckbill shape gives you more room to talk and seems to seal better than the flat-fold style. But you might need an N100 or a half-mask with cartridges, depending on how long you're in the plume and what the air monitoring says.

I can't make that call for you, and you should not let a supplier make it either. Ask for an exposure assessment or at least get a qualified safety professional involved. If your air sample includes oil-based aerosols, the filter class changes.

A respirator only helps if it fits. I knew I should have fit-tested our first batch of N95s, but I thought what are the odds? The fit test caught two techs whose masks leaked so badly they were getting almost no protection. That was the overconfidence trap.

If you're removing a diesel particulate filter, add disposable coveralls to this setup. The soot gets everywhere, and you do not want that in the fabric of your regular gear.

How to tell which scenario you're in

The truth is you'll probably live in more than one scenario during a single shift. Use this quick filter:

  • If you're doing fluid-heavy work for most of the day, put on disposable or laundered coveralls before you worry about style.
  • If you're cutting, welding, or grinding for even ten minutes, the hot-work rules win. Remove anything that is not FR-rated.
  • If you're mostly driving and inspecting, lighter gear plus tactical boots and a pair of Sterlings in the door pocket is enough.
  • If you're near running diesel engines for long stretches, get a fitted, NIOSH-approved respirator and set up a fit-testing schedule.

When in doubt, choose the higher level of protection for the worst thing you could reasonably encounter. But do not feel like you have to buy every item on this list at once.

A note for small shops: you don't need a warehouse order

When I ran a three-bay shop, a vendor basically ignored me because I wanted 25 pairs of gloves instead of 500. That vendor lost a relationship that's now worth more than $40,000 a year to me.

Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means potential.

Start with one box of Kimberly-Clark N95 respirators, one box of Sterling nitrile gloves, one set of coveralls for the dirtiest job, and one pair of boots that actually fits the person who'll wear them. That's enough to build a baseline without blowing your budget. Prices vary, but in Q4 2024 I saw identical boxes of N95s priced anywhere from $24 to $48 depending on the distributor. Check current pricing before you commit.

And if a supplier treats your small order like a problem, thank them for showing you who they are. Buy from someone who understands today's $200 order can be next year's $20,000 reorder.
