The Short Version: Why This Checklist Exists
I've been handling PPE orders for a food and light-industrial facility since 2017. In that time I've personally made—and documented—13 significant ordering mistakes, totaling roughly $14,000 in wasted budget. Not counting the embarrassment. Most of those mistakes weren't about picking a terrible product. They were about skipping a check that felt unnecessary until the moment it cost me.
This is the checklist I now run before every glove order, and the reason I'm writing it out is simple: if you're buying nitrile gloves for any facility, you can skip the expensive part and start here.
Step 1: Know What Nitrile Gloves Actually Are
First, the basics: what are nitrile gloves? They're disposable gloves made from nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), a synthetic, petroleum-based polymer. They exist because a lot of people are allergic to latex, and also because nitrile stands up to oils, greases, and punctures better than latex or vinyl. That combination made it the default industrial glove.
Here's the catch I've learned the hard way: nitrile is the material, not the specification. A 3-mil light-duty glove and an 8-mil heavy chemical glove are both "nitrile gloves." They behave completely differently in the field. So before you search for a product, answer one question: what is the glove actually protecting your team from?
- Food handling → look for food-contact certification and visible tear detection
- Chemical work → ask for a permeation and degradation chart
- General maintenance → balanced dexterity and thickness
- Medical or cleanroom → FDA-cleared exam gloves, not industrial gloves
Step 2: Stop Comparing Price per Box
I'll say it plainly: the cheapest option is rarely the cheapest once you count total cost. In 2019, I ordered a case of vinyl gloves at about half the price of our usual nitrile. Looked like a win. Then a normal shift in parts washing went through three pairs per hour because the vinyl tore every time a worker flexed over a wet part. By Thursday, the finance "savings" had turned into expedited shipping costs, a line disruption, and a new box of nitrile anyway.
That $200 savings turned into a $1,500 problem when the gloves failed on the line and we had to rush a replacement order.
When you evaluate gloves, don't compare price per box. Compare cost per task:
- How many pairs per shift does each worker actually use?
- How often does a torn glove interrupt the work?
- What's the consequence when a glove fails during a hazardous task?
I'm not saying buy the premium option every time. I'm saying the lowest quote is not the lowest total cost. That's held true on every PPE purchase I've made in eight years.
Step 3: Measure, Don't Guess Size
This is the one that still stings.
In 2021, I ordered 200 boxes of "Large" gloves from a distributor we hadn't used before. Workers with bigger hands complained within the first hour. The gloves felt tight across the palm, and the ones who pulled hard tore the webbing. I assumed the crew was being picky. Then I looked at the sizing chart. After the fact. That's the problem—after the fact. That supplier's "Large" was roughly half a size smaller than the Kimberly-Clark "Large" we'd been ordering all along. 200 boxes, $890, straight into the back of the safety cabinet as backup we never used, plus a one-week delay on the reorder. I'd checked the size column without checking the measurements behind it.
Kimberly-Clark nitrile gloves, like most reputable brands, provide a size chart based on hand measurements rather than a generic S/M/L label. Their lines vary a little, but generally the centimetric range is close to the European hand-size standard:
- Small: palm width around 7–8 cm, hand length around 16–17 cm
- Medium: palm width around 8–9 cm, hand length around 17–18 cm
- Large: palm width around 9–10 cm, hand length around 18–19 cm
- X-Large: palm width around 10–11 cm, hand length around 19–20 cm
Don't hold me to those exact cm—check the spec sheet for the specific product line, because K-C has different fit ranges for Kimtech versus SafeSkin versus their industrial lines. The point is that the numbers exist. A supplier who doesn't publish a sizing chart with measurements? Red flag. A supplier who does? Measure ten hands across your team before you order, especially if you have workers at either end of the range.
Step 4: Decide the Color on Purpose
For my first few years, I didn't give glove color a single thought. Then a food safety auditor asked me a question I couldn't answer: "If a glove breaks and a piece drops into the product, how would anyone see it?"
That's when I put our old beige gloves next to a box of Kimberly-Clark blue nitrile gloves, side by side. Sounds small, but once you see a blue glove fragment against a light food product, you understand why blue became the standard in food processing. It's not a brand aesthetic. It's contamination detection. Blue stands out visually; clear or beige can sit there unnoticed until it's too late.
If your facility handles food, pharmaceuticals, or anything where foreign-body contamination matters, blue nitrile gloves are the deliberate choice—just verify the specific line is certified for food contact.
Step 5: Check the Thickness, and Challenge the "Medical Grade" Claim
In 2022, I put two "nitrile" gloves side by side for a comparison: our standard order and a budget no-name box that just said 'nitrile' on the front. The budget one was visibly thinner at the fingertips, and there was no technical data sheet anywhere in the package. For light packaging duty, that glove might've been fine. For general facility use, it was a gamble with our team's skin.
The upside of the budget line was about $300 per case. The risk was that the thinner glove would tear on a sharp part. I kept asking myself: is $300 worth potentially a hand laceration and an incident report? The expected value said probably fine. The downside felt like a nightmare. I passed on it, and I don't regret that.
Thickness matters. Rough guide I use:
- 3–4 mil: food prep, light assemblies, low contact risk
- 5–6 mil: general maintenance, parts washing, moderate chemicals
- 8 mil and up: handling aggressive chemicals, cleanup, heavy tasks
Here's where I tell you to be careful with words: "medical grade" or "surgical grade" are meaningful claims. In the US, a medical exam glove is a regulated medical device, and it needs FDA clearance, usually a 510(k). An industrial glove is not automatically medical grade just because it's white or blue.
Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), a claim like "medical-grade" has to be truthful and substantiated with evidence. If a supplier can't produce the registration number or the spec sheet when you ask, that's your answer.
Step 6: Read the Chemical Compatibility Data
Our maintenance crew was cleaning parts with a solvent blend in 2023. They wore nitrile gloves—our standard nitrile—but the chemical compatibility chart for that solvent showed a degradation time measured in minutes, not hours. The gloves softened and failed mid-task. Nobody got seriously hurt, and I'm thankful for that, but it was the closest call I've had in this job.
If your team handles chemicals, get the permeation and degradation data from the manufacturer before buying. If a supplier doesn't publish it or won't share it on request, that's the same red flag as the missing size chart. The documentation is part of the product.
Step 7: Don't Forget the Boring PPE on the Same Order
Glove orders tend to get treated as one-product orders. But in my experience, a huge share of emergency purchases are the adjacent things nobody wrote down:
- Long leather gloves for hot work. Welding, cutting, oven trays, furnace adjustments. Nitrile gloves don't help when the surface is at 400 degrees. A decent pair of split-leather gloves is the difference between a good day and a bad one.
- Padlocks for lockout/tagout. OSHA's lockout/tagout standard (1910.147) requires lockable energy-isolating devices, and the padlock itself is the thing people forget. We've caught 47 potential errors using our pre-order checklist in the past 18 months—and six of those were jobs where the tag was there but the padlock wasn't.
Add your glove order to the rest of the safety cabinet stock. Paying one shipping cost is cheaper than paying emergency shipping on a separate order because you forgot the leather gloves.
The Mistakes I Still See on Other People's Orders
To be fair, not every cheap glove is bad. If your operation is light assembling and the glove never touches anything harsher than cardboard, a budget box might be completely fine. That said, for the mixed-work facility, these are the recurring problems:
- Assuming the size label matches across brands. It doesn't. Measure.
- Buying "nitrile" when the task is chemical work and nobody checked the compatibility chart.
- Missing that "medical grade" is a regulated claim and the supplier has no evidence to back it up.
- Ordering only gloves and leaving leather gloves and LOTO padlocks for an emergency run.
This checklist isn't complicated. None of the steps are. The hard part is doing them before the PO goes out, not after the first complaint comes back.
One Last Thing
Take this with a grain of salt: I am not a chemist, and I do not pretend to know every solvent's effect on every glove on the market. The data is the data—read it. The reason I maintain these checklists is that I've already made the expensive mistakes. The only upside is that you can skip them. Twelve minutes of checking now keeps you from an $890 reorder, a safety audit finding, or a line stoppage you'll have to explain to the plant manager on a Friday afternoon.
