5. Why would we need a wet chemical fire extinguisher if we already have ABC units?
This one didn't occur to me until we added a commercial kitchen to our break room. ABC dry chemical extinguishers cover ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, and electrical fires—but they don't work on Class K fires, which are burning cooking oils and grease.
Hit a grease fire with a standard ABC unit or water extinguisher, and the stream can splatter the oil, spraying flaming droplets everywhere. That's how a small kitchen fire becomes a building fire. Wet chemical extinguishers handle it differently: the solution reacts with hot oil through saponification, creating a thick foam blanket that smothers the fire and prevents re-ignition.
NFPA 10 requires a Class K-rated wet chemical extinguisher in commercial cooking environments. If your facility has a deep fryer—even one in an employee break room—you need one. A typical unit runs a few hundred dollars installed by a licensed fire protection company. Cheap compared to the alternative.
6. What is required before using a respirator at work?
This is the question people wish they'd asked before they bought a case of N95s. The requirements live in OSHA's respiratory protection standard, 29 CFR 1910.134, and they differ depending on whether use is required or voluntary.
If respirators are required for a task, the employer must provide:
- A medical evaluation — at minimum, a questionnaire reviewed by a healthcare provider, to confirm the employee can safely wear a respirator.
- Fit testing — for tight-fitting respirators like N95s, before first use, then annually, and whenever the model or size changes.
- Training — on proper donning, doffing, seal checks, limitations, and maintenance.
- A written respiratory protection program — covering selection, evaluation, fit testing, training, and recordkeeping.
Here's the gotcha for voluntary use: if you hand out N95s to employees just because they ask—maybe dust, maybe wildfire smoke—OSHA doesn't require a full medical evaluation or fit test. But you still have to give them the information sheet in Appendix D of the standard and make sure their voluntary use doesn't interfere with their safety. That appendix step is easy to miss, and I've seen small companies get cited for it.
7. Will distributors take a small-company order of Kimberly-Clark or MSA gear seriously?
Some won't. I'll say it straight. Back in 2021, we got dismissive quotes from distributors who clearly wanted bigger fish. But I've also kept vendors who treated our $500 orders like they mattered. Those same vendors now get five-figure orders from us. Small doesn't mean unimportant—it means potential.
